    The Poet

    Saiyid Faraz HamidSaiyid Faraz Hamid: The poet's pseudonym, FARAZ, is the same as his first name, and is reminiscent of the famed Pakistani poet Ahmed Faraz. And his literary and poetic credentials are impeccable.

    Saiyid Faraz Hamid 's mother’s paternal grandfather was an outstanding literary figure who has achieved immortality in the annuals of Urdu Literature. SYED MEHDI HASAN AFADI, born in 1875, died young at the age of 46, in the year 1931. His major works, which find a prominent place in the curriculum of colleges and universities, and have been subject to numerous researches by scholars include: AFAADAAT E MEHDI [Collection of Essays], MAKATEEB E MEHDI, MEHDI KE KHUTOOT [Collection of Letters]

    Mehdi Afadi’s letters enjoy a literary stature, which falls below only those of MIRZA GHALIB in the Art Form of letter writing. Mehdi Afadi was a close associate and friend of eminent literary personage of the time, to including ALLAMA SHIBLI, NOMAAN, HALI and SYED SULEMAN NADVI. Mehdi Afadi was born to a very wealthy family of Zamindars and was himself a Tehsildar who wore clothes that were imported from England and was very British in style and manner. The Urdu Speaking word celebrates MEHDI DAY every year as a tribute to this Man of Literature who gifted the Urdu Language with new words and expressions. The Prince of Wales conferred upon him in the early part of the century, at Allahabad, a medal, in recognition of his talent and contribution. He is considered to be one of the all time Greats of Urdu Literature.

    The poet's maternal grandfather's sister JAMILA BEGUM was a poetess writing under the name of NAHEED.

    His father SYED HAMID, served the Indian Administrative Service in his Home State UP and the Center till retirement and is a renowned scholar, a writer, a poet and a journalist. He served as VICE chancellor of ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY and has been CHANCELLOR of JAMIA HAMDARD University until his retirement a few years ago.


    The Voice

    Devi MurthyDevi Murthy: This unassuming Ghazal singer from Hyderabad hails from a reputed family of Vainikas and Carnatic classical singers of Andhra Pradesh. The youngest daughter of the famous Veena Maestro, the late Shri Emani Sankara Sastry, former Producer Emeritus of A.I.R. and Doordarshan. Devi branched into ghazal singing during her formative years, and this is where she has created a niche for herself. She has been bestowed with various honours and titles such as Pearl of Hyderabad, Malika e Ghazal and Ghazal dar Ghazal [GhazalSougandhika] for her mellifluous rendering of the Urdu poetic verse. Devi enthrals her audience with her depth and range and complete command of form and content. The ragas are like putty in her hands to be moulded according to the manifold dimensions and demands of Shairi.
